It's not even 8:00 AM
But I can't sleep any longer. Commuting has turned me into a morning person; that is, I can't sleep in, but I still wish I could.
Some of you have been asking for details about my new job. Without naming the company again and ending up with customers seeing me in my Speedo, let me just avoid using the name of the company.
First of all, the work that I will be doing now is mainly web development. The bread and butter of this new company is web content management; so for companies like law firms or NGOs that have a tonne of data to organize, they would contact us, and we'd provide a web interface to access and organize that data.
The exciting part about this position is that I will be doing the full spectrum of Software Engineering, and essentially have my own customers. I'll meet with them to do requirements analysis, design a solution, and take care of implementation, testing, and maintenance.
The second important part about this job is that it's downtown, near Spadina and Queen. For those of you out-of-towners, it's close to the CN Tower & Skydome, and a 5 minute walk to MuchMusic. See the map here. I'll be taking the subway or streetcar to work, which has actually been my dream for a long time.
I was nearly sold on the job when the CEO said during my interview, that they had been at a different location; but found that they couldn't get anything to eat at lunch, and that he wanted the office to clear out at lunch.
For those of you entering the job market for the first time, I'm convinced that the job market for Programmers and Software Engineers is booming right now, at least in Toronto. After re-working my Resume, I received 2 interview requests within 1 day of sending out my resume, and the first interview is the job I eventually accepted. Employers are willing to pay well above the average market salary for someone that they want to hire; I aimed at what I thought might be too high, and didn't even need to negotiate (which of course makes me feel that I should have aimed higher).
